Phrenology

Phrenology from Greek meaning, “mind”, and logos meaning “knowledge”) is a pseudoscience primarily focused on measurements of the human skull. It is based on the concept that the brain is the organ of the mind, and that certain brain areas have localized, specific functions or sections. Although both of those ideas have a basis in reality, phrenology extrapolated beyond empirical knowledge in a way that departed from science.

The thought of doing a series on Phrenology came to Nanda as she is intrigued by the human mind. The thoughts it focuses on, the way it perceives, the ideas it concocts and so on… In this series, she has taken the 27 facts of phrenology and focuses on what we as humans desire. The first painting “Success” with the use of colors she has extrapolated infinite success achieved through passion filled for ones’ imaginations.

Rhythm The meanings of red and people’s reactions to it tend to be fairly consistent across all age groups and cultures. Psychologists and researchers agree that Red is a color, which stirs up passion; with both negative and positive color meanings. We think of Red as the color of both Cupid and the Devil. It’s the color associated with both Love and War. “When I did this painting with the red background, I was trying to depict again the deep passion background in red, and with this, it brings in the negative in black in devil form and white in its purest form…. The thoughts and the way the mind works when one is a deep passionate state of mind:

Balance Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The colour Purple is closely linked with our subconscious thoughts of royalty and spirituality. The colour, is associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, ambition, wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic. When I did this painting with the purple background, I was trying to depict when one is in a spiritual or a calm phase, the thoughts that go through the mind are pure signified with the white and more connected with nature with the green color.

Success The color gold is the color of success, achievement and triumph. Associated with abundance and prosperity, luxury, quality, prestige, sophistication, value and elegance. The psychology of this color implies affluence, material wealth and extravagance. Gold in its physical state, by its very nature, denotes wealth and prestige in every country, culture and market in the world today – This color is linked to masculine energy and the power of the sun. Black is a mixture of all colors and usually denotes infinity. When I was doing this painting with the gold & black background with the passionate red lines, it denotes abundance, passion, and success and with the black showing infinity and the red denotes deep passionate thoughts that come through with success and affluence. Thinking Positive with the success and achievement under the belt already.
